Tracktime Tuesday

Nothing new on the road scene from over the weekend to report, so let's get to the midweek velodrome action!

From Chicago, the track at the Chicago Velo Campus is nearing completion, ready for opening this Friday, August 12th according to Chicago Cuttin' Crew's blog.  This work is done largely by volunteers, so if you live in the area on Chicago's south side, here's your chance to be part of history. This 166 meter wooden track with turns banked to 50 degrees will be covered with a temporary enclosure this fall, so it can be ridden all winter. A larger, permanent velodrome and associated building is planned for the future. 

Northbrook: If you recall, last Thursday was the 50-lap Roger DeLanghe Trophy Race at Northbook’s Ed Rudolph Velodrome. Triblocal.com published a nice story on the race this morning. Accompanying this photo, they state: "Second place finisher Emile Abraham raised his arm in triumph as Aerocat teammate Joshua Carter from Wichita Falls, TX put on the last burst of speed needed to sprint to a victory. Carter, who had a recent win at the Burlington Road Races, will now have his name engraved onto the Roger DeLanghe Trophy. Andrew Crater from Atlanta, GA raced to the finish line in third.



Minnesota: Racing continues tonight on the National Sports Center Velodrome in Blaine.

Michigan Open riding is available at Bloomer Park with the next big event being the Detroit 6 Day
August 22nd - 27th (Nightly) Monday thru Saturday - 7:30 p.m.

Indiana Weekly racing continues at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis.

Not much news coming out of the Indiana track scene, but that's why we're here at Peloton Star - to get the word out!

Weekend Recap

It was a busy weekend, so lets get to it.

Minnesota:  “Toren Heuvel Kermesse,” Dutch for “Tower Hill Bike Race.” It’s a hilltop finish circuit race on a traditional Flemish style race course. (Groucho Sports) with a  'significant' 1.5 km finishing climb according to the race flyer and a course that's 12.5km long. (map with profile) Word from Big Ring Flyers is that 22 riders were disqualified in the Men's Cat 3/4 race. (Center line violations?) No results to report yet other than Big Ring Flyer's Brad St. Mane scored a win followed by Matt Christiaansen in 3rd.

Wisconsin: On Saturday was the 32nd Annual Fire House 50 citizen's race. The first of 295 finishers was Eric Meier of Baraboo with a winning time of 2:02.06  (results). Here's the video of the finish:



Iowa: Iowa State Road Championships. 108 miles for the Senior Men and the results come from Chad Bishop of Chasing Life. He states that 7 riders went up the road early gaining up to 8 minutes on the the easy going 14 rider field. The last of the break was caught with 9 miles remaining meaning a sprint finish for those left.

Indiana:  Warsaw Downtown Classic on Saturday was won by Derek White (Bissel) (results) and on Sunday was the Indiana State Road Race Championships. We have no idea who won, but here's a couple of clips of the Pro 1/2 field:.

Illinois: First up - the 2nd Annual Edwardsville Rotary Criterium, held in a town that is approximately 30 miles east of St. Louis. Steve Tilford has a great race story (as always) from this race as he recounts attempts to capture glory that are dashed and literally left in the curb. No results available other than what's reported in Tilford's report.

Tour of Elk Grove Oh sure, we all know that Luis Romero Amaran (Cub) Jamis - Sutter Home won the Pro 1/2 race and you can read that all on Cycling News. Although they don't mention this as posted by Kenda Pro Cycling on Face Book:

 Oh, and remember Ed Veal? He's the rider from the Toronto area that won in Brookfield during Superweek, here's his story from the Elk Grove time trial:

I went down to Elk Grove thinking I might be able to get a top 15 or 20 and win some money with the way I’ve been riding as of late. I have had a few short TT’s around the 47km/hour mark and I thought that just might be good enough to be competitive down here. Likely you can already tell from what I have written so far things didn’t go as planned. I was one of the last to go and for the first time in my life I had a follow car during the TT.
The first 500-600 meters hurt way more than normal and right away I was worried that I’d been beaten before I even got into the meat of the TT.  I did get on top of the gear after the first turn but never felt comfortable which I thought meant I was flying.  If you’re not in pain your not going fast right? I cranked out a big gear while the guys behind me honked the horn and rev’d the engine to pump me up. When I finished I really thought I had gone pretty good, but the first thing out of my mouth to the team was… ”I’m sorry guys”.
I don’t ride with anything on my bike so other than knowing that I gave it everything I had I had no idea what kind of time I pulled off.  I just knew that my everything today wasn’t likely going to be enough. I couldn’t have gone any harder so I was happy knowing I’d emptied the tank and left it all on the road but my gut still told me that I wasn’t at my best.
I got the results sheet from the timer and quickly skimmed down looking for my name on the first sheet.  Not there? I skim it again a little slower this time and ask Sean Kelly to look over my shoulder and look too. The top 30 guys are on the sheet and my name isn’t there. I flip the page and go almost to the bottom before I see my teammate Matteo Del Cin in 54th with a time of 8:59. Two spots later I see my name at 3 one hundredths of a second back of Teo with 8:59.
Let me tell you seeing 56th place hurt. I killed myself for almost nine mins only to get beat by 55 other guys. The crazy part is the winner Karl Menzies (United Health Care) got me by 30+ seconds… on a 7km course?

Tour of Elk Grove - Day 1

The first day of competition in the 2011 Tour of Elk Grove, near Chicago, is complete and Karl Menzies (United Health) originally from Devonport, Tazmania, but currently residing in Grand Rapids, MI wins the first 7.24km time trial over Tom Zirbel (Jamis Sutter-Home) by a scant 0.11 seconds. Results: MEN, WOMEN.

TONIGHT! The Roger DeLanghe Trophy Race at the Northbrook Velodrome, just north of Chicago. From their website: " ... this 50 lap scratch race contest pays the top 25 riders and offers the largest total purse of the season. If a rider can finish the race, they usually end up in the money. This night of racing features the most prime laden race of the season. Crowd favorites are the 4-place “mid-way sprint prime” at 25 laps and the 2-place “gamblers” prime at 2 laps to go.Each year the winner’s name is engraved onto one of the most impressive trophies in cycling. ... "

Bits and pieces for a Tuesday

More bits and pieces.

Tom Held reports in Off The Couch that Jack Hirt's "Unnamed Epic" 75 mile point to point MTB ride near Blue Mounds, WI has been cancelled this year. That is a shame because it was a great mix of road racing and trail riding that left riders simply gassed at the end. Those that finished, that is, since nearly half dropped out if the inaugural event. The route basically connected a series of MTB trails together via road and gravel bike path, with the finish being on top of Blue Mound, the highest point in southern Wisconsin. Initially, we thought that the winner, Pat Lemieux swapped bikes from a cyclocross bike early on, to a full on MTB at the end to help conquer this sick challenge, but Lemieux did it all suffering on a MTB. The first course was probably more suited towards the roadie rather than the MTBer, perhaps Jack was trying to balance it more? This race is also known for it's coolest trophies!

Champions in the team competition looking like they are from Star Trek!

While MTBing isn't the primary target of these pages, as long as we're on that topic, I do want to mention one other MTB race that stands out from the crowd: 12 Hours of Pitch Black Single Track which will be held on September 3/4, 2011. Held at the Cam-Rock trails, just east of Madison, WI (same trails as the 'cross races there) this is an 8pm to 8am race, so the focus is on head lamps and dark trails. A very cool experience even if you just want to pop over and spectate. They always have food and drink available at the S/F ! Maybe someone needs to put on a night time 'cross race around here. Kind of like 'Cross Vegas.

Odd and Ends

Putting a few loose ends together here mid-day.

In the Grayslake video below of the Masters race, you can see a couple riders just fall over the curb in the crash. Unfortunately, as reported on ChicagoBikeRacing.Com, a little girl got caught up in that and ended up with a broken wrist. Word has it, however, that she is in good spirits and on the mend. We wish her all the best for a fast recovery!

Our good friend and top photographer, Karl Hokanson, sends along this never before seen photo of Matthew Busche of Wauwatosa, WI, riding to victory in the 2009 Wisconsin State Time Trial Championships setting a blistering pace in the pouring rain. Soon after this, he was quickly hired by Kelly Benefit Strategies and later signed by Radio Shack for whom he is currently riding for in Europe. Category 5 to Pro in 3 years.

Weekend Wrap

Here's a review of what information is available at this time. The Grayslake Criterium (Ill) was on Saturday and appears to have been well attended. Well, attended 99% by riders from Illinois despite only being some 10 miles south of the state line. Still not sure what the deal is about crossing the border. RESULTS In the Mens Pro 1/2 John Tomlinson continues to show good form and welcome back to the peloton Mike Sherer after breaking his collar bone earlier in the season:

Is it 'Cross yet? No!

No, there's no 'cross races yet, it's only August! I know that some of you are sneaking in some MTBing and cross racing doesn't begin in earnest until September, so you've still got time to practice your mounts and hops if it's not too hot. Let's take a look at what August has to offer on the road here in the midwest before we starting thinking much about mud. Indiana still has two criteriums and the Indiana State Road Race to race. In Illinois, the big money Tour of Elk Grove TT/RR/Criterium for the Pros kicks off the month along with a criterium down in Edwardsville. Also, the Illinois State Championships begin on the track in Northbrook. 

Over in Iowa, they have their state road race and TT championships in Iowa City and Des Moines has a criterium on the thirteenth. In Minnesota, their state track championships begin on the wooden velodrome in Blaine and on the road, the Tornen Heuval Kermesse happens in Avon on the 7th followed by the Minnesota state road race championship on the 14^th in Richmond. Across the pond, in Michigan, their state road race championships paired with a criterium up on Traverse City are held on the 13^th and 14^th. Don't forget the USAC Pro Criterium Championships in Grand Rapids on the 20^th, and on the 28^th you can still race a criterium in Birmingham. 

Here in Wisconsin, there are a pair of criteriums in Menasha on the 13^th and 14^th, followed by another in Fond Du Lac on the 20^th. Don't forget Race the Lake, the 90 mile race around Lake Winnebago on the 21st that offers $10,000 in prize money and a rare point-to-point racing experience.  


Don't forget that all the velodromes still have racing action in August so support their programs and check 'em out!

IS Corp fielded a team in The Tour de l’Abitibi which is an UCI sanctioned international stage race for junior men 17 and 18 years old held in Amos, Quebec. National teams, regional teams, and club teams will compete in the largest stage race for juniors in North America, if not the world.

Kaitlin Antonneau and Ashley James recently competed in France at the Tour de Bretagne Feminin and the Tour du Limousin. Velonews had a short write up stating:

Ashley James (Team Kenda p/b GearGrinder) also finished well, placing fifth in the Young Rider Classification with her top finish coming stage 2′s individual time trial. 

Kaitlin Antonneau (Peanut Butter & CoTwenty12) and Kendall Ryan (Team TIBCO to the Top) also helped the U.S. National Team finish 7th in the Teams Classification.

Re: US Steel / Chicago Velocampus

I was curious about the old US Steel site where Chicago Velocampus is building their new velodrome. I found this site that gives a brief history of the 'south works' site.

The site reads:

The story of the South Works reads as a microcosm of the rust belt. First opened in 1882 as the North Chicago Railway Mill Company, the mill went through several name changes before becoming the U.S. Steel South Works. The placement of the steel mill at the mouth of the Calumet River at Lake Michigan made for easy transport of goods and raw materials. The neighborhood that developed around the mill, South Chicago, was filled with immigrants of all types who came to the area for the well-paying jobs at the mill. However, the prosperity did not last forever, and due mainly to market forces affecting the entire United States steel industry, the South Works began a long period of downsizing beginning in the 1970s. Finally, on April 10, 1992, the doors closed for good. The mill that once produced steel beams for most of Chicago’s skyscrapers and jobs for thousands of area residents was now gone, and with it went the prosperity of South Chicago. With each round of job cuts at the mill, the neighborhood had become more and more economically depressed. Once the South Works closed, South Chicago spiraled into major decay, a trend that has yet to be reversed.

Chicago Velocampus

At 8615 South Burley Avenue, Chicago, a new era is starting, or perhaps  it could be stated that an old era is being revived.



The temporary 166 meter track is going up quickly now, won't be long before someone gets to be the first to put wheels to the boards. A 'bubble' is planned to be installed over this temporary track for this winter. The permanent 250 meter track will be indoors.

Track Racing!

We're baaaaack! Did you miss us? Hey, this past Tuesday, Peloton Star went down to the Washington Park Velodrome in Kenosha to watch the 150 lap points race. 150 laps with a sprint for points every 5 laps. That will make the 50k go by quickly! According to Len Cabaltera on FaceBook:
Great Night in Kenosha with the 150 lap Bob Pfarr. Teamwork prevailed as John Tomlinson of Chemstar won for his second time time. Second Place was David Moyer of XXX Racing and Alex Wielser of Chemstar in third. Race time for 150 laps was 1:06.

Among the approximately 24 starters, two women also competed in the race - Stacy Appelwick (ABD) and Samantha Schneider (TIBCO). Spectators on the field numbered around 200 according to the track announcer, so it was a good night of racing. Check out the video:



Racing continues at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook, IL (schedule) and construction of the 166 meter track at the Chicago Velocampus is coming along nicely. One of only two new velodromes currently in construction in the United States. Support your local track program!

Antonneau to Elite 'Cross Worlds

 Cyclocross Magazine is announcing that Kaitlin Antonneau has been named to the Elite Woman's Cyclocross Worlds team that will be held on January 29-30 in St. Wendel, Germany.

Leading the elite women’s squad will be seven-time national champion Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Planet Bike-Stevens Bikes). A serious contender for the world title, Compton earned an automatic nomination to the team after taking four of the five World Cup wins this season.
Another automatic qualifier for the women’s team is Sue Butler (Portland, Ore.). Butler earned her nomination based on her 14^th-place finish at the second World Cup this season. She has been active on the ‘Cross World Cup circuit and recently ended her domestic season with fifth-place at the national championships in Bend.
Joining Compton and Butler on the start line in Germany will be discretionary nominees Meredith Miller (Fort Collins, Colo./Team TIBCO-To the Top), Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo.), and Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12).

House, Sherer and Others Transfer Teams

'Tis the season for changing teams and rumors are being confirmed on just who is riding for whom.

Last week, word had it that Oneida, WI native Cole House was transferring from powerhouse BMC over to the US Pro team RealCyclist.Com in support of climber Francisco Mancebo. After racing much of last year in Europe with BMC, why did House suddenly change teams? Today Cycling News just published an interview with Cole that explains the change:

Cole House rode for BMC’s development team in 2009 and 2010, serving briefly as a stagiaire towards the end of the season. He tasted success on the road in the US this year, claiming a stage in the Valley of the Sun Stage and the International Cycling Classic. “It was kind of touch and go whether I would sign with BMC but it was kind of hard to compete for a spot when they're signing big names,” House told Cyclingnews. “But RealCyclist.com just came out of nowhere. I had my agent working on trying to get a ProTeam deal but with all the teams merging or down-sizing there wasn’t much. Then one day I got an email from Gordon Fraser saying he was directing this new team and wanted me to join them.”

Also in the news is Bloomington, Indiana's Mike Sherer who just came off a very successful season with Verizon U25 and is moving on to Kelly Benefit Strategies per an announcement published in The Daily Peloton:

Three former European based Garmin riders join KBS including Michael Friedman, Michael Creed and Jason Donald. Daniel Holloway, the current USPRO Criterium champ also joins the roster this season as well as Thomas Soladay, Julian Kyer, Michael Sherer and Colton Barrett. The 2011 KBS roster sees some old familiar faces. Soladay is a former member of the Kelly Benefit Strategies amateur team based in Baltimore and Creed is a former teammate of Carney.

Finally here, Kenda Pro Cycling has announced their final roster for 2011 including new transfer from Texas Roadhouse - Pat Lemieux who will ride along side of Chad Hartley, Jim Stemper, and Rob White among others.
