OHIO: Cincinatti - Cincy 3 Festival - Kaitlin Annonteau (Cannondale) finished 4th in the final, Harbin Park race over in Cincinnati to complete a very consistent and successful weekend of UCI racing. Chicago's Devon Gorry was 8th, Minnesota's Linda Sone 15th.
  Sheboygan's Tristan Schouten (Cyclocrossracing.com) drove down from northern Michigan after the Iceman, and still managed a strong 6th place. That's a Working Man's Pro!

Notable in the Junior 10-14, Andrew Schmidt of Lake Geneva got his 6th win on the year upsetting Skylar Schneider's quest to clean sweep ALL the 'cross races she's entered. Her winning streak currently stands at 8 in a row. Meanwhile, big sister, Samantha Schneider (TIBCO) keeps her win streak alive with another victory making her record so far 10-0.

WISCONSIN: Milwaukee Estabrook Park RESULTS PHOTOS PHOTOS Estabrook Park, a fast course and rider favorite. The battle in the Pro 1/2 Women's series for the WCA races is getting interesting. The WCA site doesn't have a tally for the overall posted yet, but maybe it's time. Sam Schneider (TIBCO) has been splitting her time between WI and IL and currently has 4 wins in Wisconsin (Domes, Grafton, Doyne, and Wash. Park). Alyssa Severn (Cyclocrossracing.Com) has 3 wins (Whitewater, Further, and Sheboygan). This week's winner and WORS overall champion, Abby Strigel (Cyclocrossracing.Com) now has 2 (River Hill and Estabrook) but also a string of 2nds and the certainly the pedigree to win more. I'd like to see the official overall standings with 5 races remaining. Props also to Julie Phelps (BigRingFlyers) for making the jump to Category 2 this week.

Iceman Cometh 2011 - Results

MICHIGAN: Traverse City - Iceman Cometh - RESULTS  PHOTOS It took hard charging, world class competition to knock the locals off the podium in the north woods today. Switzerland's Lukas Fluckinger (Trek World Racing) got the win yesterday in the 29 mile point to point Iceman Cometh MTB race. Fluckinger, second in the 2005 U23 World Championships, was followed by Jeremiah Bishop (Cannondale), Pan American Gold Medalist and 12 time member of the US Cycling Team, and in third was Sam Schultz (Subaru-Trek) 2006 U23 US MTB Cross-Country national champion, and 8 time World Championship team member. Local favorite Brian Matter (Gear Grinder) washed out on a turn in the final km that ruined his chances at winning the Midwest MTB triple crown trophy, and his Sheboygan, WI neighbor Tristan Schouten (Mafia Racing) just didn't have the legs to get him the repeat win he was looking for. Once again it was a very close finish, check out the video from Cycling Dirt below. Once again, the best action is right here in the Midwest. It's not all about the coasts!

In the women's race, 2009 XC National Champion Heather Irminger (Subaru-Trek) earned top spot on the podium over Chloe Woodruff (BMC MTN Devel.) and Canadian national team member Catharine Pendrel (Luna Chix). Both the men and women winners took home checks for $5,000.

Antonneau 3rd at Cincy3 - Day 1

OHIO: Cincinnatti - Cincy 3 Cyclocross Festival Day Kaitlin Antonneau rode her own pace and grabbed the last podium spot on Friday's UCI opener in Cincinnatti. Cycling Dirt: "Between Compton’s pace and the grinding hills, the race split into pairs with Compton and Miller on the front, Gould and Antonneau chasing and Mani and Butler struggling to maintain contact. 

On lap 4, Compton finally shook Miller to take the win solo by :38.  Antonneau pegged it on the climb from the Bandshell dropping a struggling Gould to secure the 3^rd spot on the podium.  Mani stayed determined, keeping the pedal to the floor and eventually passed both Gould and Butler for 4^th.  Georgia continued to fade from her fast start to finish 6^th." 

 

Podium Insight: "“I felt that I wasn’t going that fast because the course is so hard and there’s a lot of uphill but I just rode within myself and just kept picking people off. It was good, I’m happy with how it went.” Antonneau said about her ride.""During her surge up, Antonneau caught riders including Georgia Gould (Luna), she explained, “I just went in front and just rode within myself on the climb, saw that I was by myself. It was a good race but I wanted to make sure I had some in the tank for Sunday too.”"

Chicago's Devon Gorry (Rambuski Law) placed 7th, Coryn Rivera (from CA but riding for Indiana's Marian Univ) was 9th, Minnesota's Linda Sone (Cycle-Smar/Flanders) - 12th, Wisconsin Junior phenom Corrie Osborne (IS-Corp) - 13th, and Ashley James (Kenda) from Dousman, WI and freshly back from US Collegiate MTB nationals - DNF.

Iceman Cometh - Tomorrow!

MICHIGAN: Traverse City - The Iceman Cometh - Tomorrow, Saturday November 5th all the big names will be at the start line in Traverse City.  The race starts in downtown Kalkaska, Michigan and finishes twenty nine miles later on the eastern edge of Traverse City, Michigan. The course consists primarily of dirt roads, two-tracks (the majority of the course), abandoned railroad beds, and the world famous Vasa Nordic ski trail. It crosses only one paved road (Williamsburg Rd at mile 16) as it winds through the breath taking (literally) terrain of the Pere Marquette State Forest in Northern Lower Michigan.

The weather looks great - sunny with a high of 54F, morning temps just below freezing.

Will Brian Matter get the win and the triple crown challenge? In the first race of the challenge, the Ore to Shore in the U.P. on August 13th, (from Cycling News): "Matter won with a fierce attack out of a group of four with one mile to the finish. The lead group was 13 men strong almost 30 miles into the race and included, Matter, Tristan Schouten, Cole House, last year's winner TJ Woodruff, and three-time champ Mike Simonson.
With 18 miles to go, the attacks started coming fast and furious. Slowly, one by one, the lead group diminished. With eight miles to go the lead group was down to four riders and Cole House (Real Cyclists), one of the NRC's top sprinters, looked to be ready for his first win. According to Matter he launched a "suicide attack" with one mile to go and watched as House and Schouten slowly closed on him down the final straight away. House turned the final corner with 20 meters to go, but couldn't close the gap"

Next up was Chequamegon, near Hayward, WI on September 16th. (Cycling News): "Brian Matter (Gear Grinder) won his fourth Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, becoming the first man to do so in the 29-year history of the race. His time of 2:00:59.9 was nearly two minutes faster than the previous record in 2010. Matter, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, won despite strong rides from Radioshack and Garmin/Cervelo road professionals Jason McCartney and Christian Vande Velde. "

WISCONSIN: Sheboygan - Tristan "The Working Man's Pro" Schouten gives us the lowdown on the racing in Colorado this past Sunday, 'Ya gotta really read the whole thing, but here's a quick quote: " I was determined at that point to beat him (Todd Wells) though only because he accused me of basically sandbagging the big race by not racing the day prior but in my mind I was thinking no, I didn't race the day earlier but I did work 43hrs this week, flew to the race this morning, I don't have a bike in the pits and the one I am riding has 10lbs of mud on it and the last lap you took a fresh clean one from the pits, I also have a file tread on the front and it's a muddy race but it's all I have. No mechanic, no lawnchair under an awning or a trailer, no one cleaning my bike after warming up and getting full of mud, no one in the pit and I have to fly home in 3hrs and be at work tomorrow too. I Just showed up and let er rip. And I guess that is what made me so happy about getting 5th (yes I did outsprint him - probably due to working too much, and not from training too much I'll add).

I got extremely lucky that I didn't have problems but I went out to the race knowing I would have to get lucky and it worked out. What I am trying to say is what I have been saying for a while now and that is you can't think about how good others seem to have it or how easy it is for them to race without the other distractions that we all face day to day in our own worlds. You just have to deal with your personal situation and pin on your number and let it rip and pray for the best."

HOLLAND: Yesterday I ran across this video about the Bull of Breveland - Johnny Hoogerland. You know, the guy that got run off the road in this year's Tour and was forced to ride through the barbed wire fence? From Wikipedia: "At the 2011 Tour de France Hoogerland won the Mountain jersey in the 6th stage. After losing it in the 8th stage, Hoogerland managed to recapture it in the 9th stage. In that same stage, he was then involved in a dramatic crash after fellow breakaway rider, Team Sky's Juan Antonio Flecha, was sideswiped by a France Télévisions car, causing Hoogerland to crash into a barbed wire fence. Despite deep cuts to his legs, requiring 33 stitches, Hoogerland finished the stage, losing nearly 17 minutes as a result of the crash. Flecha and Hoogerland were jointly awarded the Combativity award for the day."
