Queen's Day Criterium

MICHIGAN: Holland - Queen's Day Criterium - RESULTS PHOTOS

The first year a criterium is included in the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan. In fact, the national radio of Holland, Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) featured an interview on their network about the race!

LISTEN

Kolo t.c. has the full race recap: " The first Queen’s Day Criterium went off in professional style this morning, with the whole town’s attention turned on some absolutely amazing racing in the heart of Holland. A huge turnout, with most categories filled up to the limit, made the day exciting from start to finish. The much anticipated showdown in the Men’s Elite race between BISSELL and Einstein Racing certainly lived up to the hype, as the two Michigan superpowers squared off almost man-to-man. The squads matched each other move for move right from the gun. BISSELL had the early upper hand when they put two riders up the road in a group that included Leadout’s Dan Korienek, Anthony Prentice and, watching patiently, Jason Young. ... MORE"

Chad Rector of CyclingAndSuffering.Com gives us the FULL Category 4 recap: I was caught pretty quickly, as expected, and slowed up hoping for someone to counter attack so I could grab their wheel and be in a great position for the bunch sprint. Mike Bellovich made a good move on the back straight, where I had made many moves earlier to gain ground towards getting away from the back. He had a commanding lead of about 50 ft coming out of the final turn and carried his speed out of it quite well also. I tried to answer his move at the back but had to slow up to make the two turns before the final straight. Shortly after clearing the corner, and still on the front of the pack, I started sprinting ....

2013 Cone-Azalia Road Race

CristinRobb.Com
MICHIGAN: Milan - Cone-Azalia Classic Road Race - RESULTS PHOTOS

“The Paris-Roubaix of the Midwest”

Under near perfect weather (for a change), a near record number of riders raced in Michigan's Paris-Roubaix type road race. Paul Martin wrote of this race back in 2011: "Cone Azalia is about as epic of a road race as you will find in the Midwest.  Sure, it’s only 70 miles and pancake flat southeast Michigan, but when the race’s website says “anything you have that is carbon fiber on your road bike, if you can, LEAVE IT AT HOME! Seriously! It may BREAK!” you know you’re in for it.  28 miles of the 70 are dirt/gravel roads, littered with 6 inch deep potholes filled with water by morning rain.  This turned the dirt into a wet cement like spray that coated your face, legs and drivetrain. Riding in the wind on the dirt was imperative, not only to avoid the mud spray off the back wheel of the guy in front of you but to steer around the huge potholes that constantly ejected water bottles and punctured tires."

Martin Veccio of Team Panther gives us the 2013 blow by blow:

Team Panther showed to Michigan’s version of Paris-Roubaix with a strong squad. The cross winds and the potholed dirt roads would certainly play a role in deciding the race.  The winner would be a hard man. I flatted after only 7 miles.  I hit a particularly square cornered pothole and pinch flatted. I had my rear wheel off already as the wheel truck slammed on the brakes. I tossed a new wheel in and and got rolling again, and was quickly paced back to the field.  Probably the best wheel change of my life. ... More attacks went as the field was dwindling because of flats and a hard pace and no place to hide from the cross winds. A group of 4 riders went and were able to make a sustainable gap. Panther had only one rider in the break. Paul said “we need another ride up there, Martin, GO.” ...  The Panther boys kept it aggressive leading into the finish, keeping the other teams on their toes and forcing them to chase. The remainder of the field sprinted and Panther was able to get four in the top 10, with Paul Martin in third. - Martin Vecchio

Tour de Champaign / Urbana Grand Prix

Photo: texasroadhousecycling.com/
ILLINOIS: Champaign - Tour de Champaign Criterium - PHOTOS RESULTS A steady rain greeted riders on this weekend opener, but it did not dampen the enthusiasm for this race that continues to gain popularity; drawing riders from six states (IL, IN, KY, MI, MO, WI) A mid race crash and generally high pace split the Pro 1/2 field several times on this basic rectangular course, but in the end, Texas Roadhouse came out on top with two riders on the podium.

On the women's side, it was the small Le Petites Victories team that dominated putting two of their riders in the 3 rider break and dominating the podium over Team PSIMET. Race winner Jannette Rho gives us the full race summary:

"We fired off a couple of attacks and as we expected, Psimet  responded. The other women in the field were quick to cover moves early in the race. While slimC was on the front, a little move went that included two women from Psimet. I was a bit out of position to respond quickly but I worked and moved up to cover it. It was a group of five that got a little gap so we started to rotate through. I took a hard pull into the wind then Kelli Richter (Psimet) pulled through telling me it was just us two. It seemed the other three fell off pace and suddenly we were in that position where we go for it to make the break work or sit up."

"Knowing we were gone, my attention went towards winning this thing. I was determined to make my team proud. I expected Kelli to go early so as we hit the last lap, I kept an eye for an early attack. I chose the final turn as the marker for my move if she didn’t go by then. We climbed the little hill before the turn and Kelli had yet to jump so I rounded the corner on the inside and went for it. I saw Kelli’s Psimet wheel creep up in the corner of my eye but I was able to stay on the gas and cross the line first. Woo!

ILLINOIS: Urbana - Urbana Grand Prix - PHOTOS RESULTS Day 2 of the Tour de C-U weekend started off wet as well, but for the Pro 1/2 event the weather started to break. Kyle Selph (Sammy's): "Sunday gave way to threatening skies and some light passing showers over the downtown Urbana area. Saturday’s wet course was challenging but doable. Sundays 8 corner, broken pavement, manhole covered course in the wet would be suicidal.  As we walked the course the rain had paused and the standing water seemed to be receding for the moment.

At the start of the race the pavement had just started to show signs of drying and we even caught a glimpse of the sun. The race started fast as usual and the pack didn’t seem to have any concerns with traction so I quickly put it out of my head and got down to business."

2013 LaCrosse Omnium

WISCONSIN: La Crosse - Omnium (TT,CRT,RR) RESULTS PHOTOS After a heaping helping of deep snow just days prior to the opening time trial up Grand Dad's Bluff, the 2013 La Crosse Omnium was held under mostly sunny skies. A great location for a weekend of racing that's just close enough to offer a rare mix of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin riders not often seen. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, how about some video?! Props to Prenzlow Perspective for covering the entire series in fine fashion. Race Recap: 2013 Whitnall Spring Classic

The Pro 1/2 winning break
WISCONSIN: Hales Corners - RESULTS PHOTOS Under mostly sunny skies and cool, but seasonable temperatures, the annual Whitnall Park Spring Classic was held with a great turnout. The course is somewhat "D" shaped, but with only one real turn that's almost a hairpin that leads into a longish, gentle climb that never seems to end. It is a tough course to get away on and despite numerous attacks in all categories, it wasn't until the featured Pro 1/2 event that a break was successful.  Johathan Heile (Erik's) and Alexander Martin (KS Energy) escaped on the last lap and was able to hold off the chasing pack of wolves for the win and second place respectively. This was Heile's first win on the road in his long career beginning as a young junior, besting Martin who has had numerous wins as a Cat. 3 on the road, and as a Cat. 2 in 'cross. Martin is the 2012 Cat. 3 Wisconsin State Criterium Champion.

Midwest Cyclocross Videos

Yup, we're still here! Lack of time plus the recent upheaval of the sport both locally and internationally put a damper on my enthusiasm, but it's coming back slowly. The Star will continue on!

How about some fun videos? First off, the Pro 1,2,3 finish from this weekend's 'Cross race in Chicago, followed by a great compilation of crashes from Minnesota.

This first clip is reportedly the final sprint for the Illinois State Cyclocross Championships although the video description doesn't go that far:

Tour of America's Dairyland - Schlitz Park

WISCONSIN: Milwaukee - Finally a criterium with a climb. And a hell of a climb it is, ascending the approximately 15 - 18% block long wall on 2nd street in the historic Schlitz Park, an on going renovation of the old Schlitz beer brewery complex. Superweek began racing here 15 years ago on a different course using this same climb, a super fast course where Norm Alvis, riding for Saturn at the time, lapped the Pro 1/2 field not once, not twice, but FOUR times back in 1997. Surely a record of some type. This was a different course, however, ascending the hill right out of turn 1, then ascending another block of lesser severity, before flattening out and dropping back down through a series of left and right turns, ending in a tight chicane with 200 meters to the line. A bike handler's course which help decide last night's Pro 1/2 event where Cole House (Competitive Cyclist) and James Stemper (Kenda / 5 Hour Energy) played a game of 'chicken' through the downhill turns to decide the race winner.

The late evening race began with about 100 riders heading into the evening sun, but the severity and  technical aspects of the course quickly strung them out as 10 riders, growing to 12, formed a lead group. That group contained (per ToAD): "Stemper and teammates Chad Hartley and John Murphy, Cole House (Competitive Cycling), Frank Pipp (Bissell), Rahsaan Bahati (Bahati Foundation), Chad Burdzilauskas (Texas Roadhouse), Emile Abrahahm (Latino Cycling Team), Fabrizio Von Nacher (Velo Club LaGrange), Augusto Sanchez (GS Mengoni), Cody O’Reilly (Optum Pro Cycling), and Andrew Baker (Bissell)."

The crowd was undeniably younger than at the other venues, being held on Milwaukee's fashionable lower east side, not far from the Marquette University, UW - Milwaukee, and other campuses, and they loved every bit of the race. The climb was alive with cheers of encouragement - from the guy with the bull horn, to the Stemper Nation rooting for local James Stemper (Kenda), and all around the course chants of "Ba - Ha - Ti!" rang out as Raahsan Bahati raced in the lead group but finished a very disappointing 11th.

Many exploratory moves were made from the leading dozen, Frank Pipp (Bissel) seen here makes an attack late in the race with just 12 laps to go.

With just 5 laps remaining, Stemper took his dig and Cole House tagged along. In one lap the pair had a sizable gap, and that sure looked to be be the winning move for one of them. A final cat and mouse game up the final climb, and then a death defying game of 'chicken' down the twisty descent, Stemper came out of the chicane first, taking his second win of the series, and 6th win in a row for Team Kenda.

Stemper enjoys the moment of glory as House
makes sure his second place is secure.

Race announcer Todd Busteed interviews winner James Stemper.

Busteed and third place Frank Pipp.

Race announcer Brad Sohner and second place Cole House.

Winner James Stemper enjoys the moment.

 TOP 5 RESULTS
1  James STEMPER Kenda
2  Cole HOUSE Competitive Cyclist
3  Frank PIPP Bissel
4  John MURPHY Kenda
5  Emile ABRAHAM Latino Cycling Team

Racing at the Tour of America's Dairyland continues through Sunday, today being a scenic road race just outside of Fond du Lac, WI on a scorchingly hot day just like the last time they raced on that course, followed by four NCC criteriums which surely will make Team Kenda's winning streak a challenge.
