MICHIGAN: Mount Pleasant - RESULTS PHOTOS - The 5th annual Tour de Mont Pleasant featuring a total purse of $18,000 over 3 days! Paul Martin (Panther) scorched the opening Time Trial, but it was 44 year old Kirk Albers from Upper Arlington, OH who sealed the deal and won both the 107 mile road race on Saturday and the closing criterium on Sunday. From Central Michigan Life:
"A 107-mile road race on Saturday gave pro riders a chance to prove themselves in the longest of the three professional cyclist races.
“It was a long race,” Kirk Albers said. “Second place and I, we’re both cramping really bad. It was quite difficult the last 200 yards.”
Albers, 44, from Columbus, Ohio, finished first in the road race, racing with three other teammates. Albers has been racing for 27 years and has competed in more than 2,000 races, and this was his third year racing in Mount Pleasant.
“It’s really nice since the last two years we’ve come up here as a team,” Albers said. “We won the criterium the last two years, but the road race, which has traditionally been on Sunday, has not gone very well for us. It was nice to have things fall into place and to be able to win the race.”

With help from team mates Dustin Morici, Axel Voitik, and Eric Blankinship Hogan Sills brought home the overall win at the TOG this weekend. Hogan was up against some very stiff competition including Liam Donoghue (Natural Grocers Cycling Team) and Anthony Olson (St Paul Bicycle Racing Club/Mitsubishi Laser/Grand Performance)  

Hogan's consistent results on Friday and Saturday placed him in second going into the final Sunday crit. Hogan sealed the deal by winning the bunch sprint taking 2nd in the crit and moving up to the top spot in the omnium competition."

"I was not feeling very confident heading into the road race. Something about riding for 89-miles, including over 6,500 feet of climbing, after burning my legs up in two races, did not sound pleasurable. The previous year I bonked during the road race, after racing hard the previous day, getting dropped by the main field. This year I was focused on recovery and proper eating between and during races. Fortunately for me, my nutritionist (my girlfriend) was kind enough to tell me exactly what to eat and when to eat it. This was a huge help when all your blood is flowing to your legs and not your head.

Our leader after day 1 was Hogan, sitting in 3rd overall. Our backup plan was Axel, sitting in 6th. I was in 9th. We like multiples of 3....

Hogan seemed unsure of his chances for moving up the standings after cramping up near the end of day 1’s circuit race. Liam, the races current leader was also proving a tough nut to crack. He had placed 1st in the circuit race and 1st in the time trial. ,,,,,,,, "

Jeannie Kuhajek shares her thoughts on the race and her overall victory:

"The Tour started on Friday afternoon with undoubtedly the most challenging stage, a 30 mi (48 km) circuit race – four laps of a 7 mi circuit that was either up or down, including a significant climb with a grueling two-part 15% section and semi-technical descent. By lap three the hill had whittled the bunch to just three riders. The final climb up the ‘wall’ I tuned off the signal from my body to stop pedaling and fall over on the spot and pushed hard against the gradient. Carrying an advantage at the top of the climb, I was able to extend the gap over the final 6 km to finish clear. Win number one.  "

Diablo Criterium

WISCONSIN: Menasha - RESULTS PHOTOS - One of the last races on the Wisconsin Cycling Association calendar (ToAD races are not included), this was the northern most race in the state this year and the turnout was pretty good. Little news out of there as of now, but Kevin Berger (Wheel & Sprocket) shares a view of his winnings on the day in the photo to the left. Not bad for 6th in the Pro 1/2.

Lake Geneva Road Race

WISCONSIN: Lake Geneva - RESULTS PHOTOS - As a road race alternative to the Glencoe Grand Prix Criterium, the Lake Geneva road race had a pretty decent turnout with the largest field being the Masters 4/5 with 60 finishers. Not much news traffic coming out of there however, but Gareth Reeves of the Elmhurst Masters Competition Cycling team (EMC^2) gives a great recap of the Masters 1/2/3 race. Give it a read: "About 25 riders lined up for the neutral start to the 46 mile, 8 lap race just outside of Lake Geneva. The race was heavily dominated by local teams LAPT, Trek Midwest and Team Wisconsin (KS). My favorite breakaway buddy, Scott Pearson and myself lined up in the back. There probably was only 5 riders that weren’t on one of the three big teams and Scott and I chatted about how it would play out. Scott pointed out John Van Susteren, from LAPT (the hosting team), as the wheel to watch."

Glencoe Grand Prix

ILLINOIS: Glencoe - RESULTS PHOTOS - It was a wet and wild time in Glencoe this past Saturday as the 7th annual Glencoe Grand Prix got showered on heavily through the last 3 races of the day. The drama began near the end of the women's 3/4 race as two separate crashes occurred, each forcing the halting of the race. Both accidents resulted in the transport of a rider to a local hospital, the second of which sounds possibly serious. The police did take the rider's bicycle as evidence (of what?) and were interviewing neutral support members. As the cat. 4 women were standing on the line with just 2 laps to go, the race was called. So, this race was never finished and there are no results.

 

Next up was the men's cat. 2/3 race, now shortened to 50 minutes as they spent 15 to 20 minutes standing on the line, waiting for the police to finish their investigation of the last crash and the course to be cleared. Once started, the 97 starters wasted no time and tore around the 1.3 mile, 10 turn course, spending most of the time stretched out in one long line. A sprint finish was on tap with Christopher Curran just narrowly beating Hogan Sills on the line, Nate Labecki taking a solid 3rd.

After the nicely prompt podium for the men's cat. 2/3, the Pro 1/2 women were sent off for a warm up lap, and then held in the staging area just off course for 30+ minutes as officials awaited for the course to be cleared for unreleased reasons, assumably to allow the police to finish their investigation. Unfortunately this not only shortened their race to 20 laps but it began to rain. A rain that would shape not only this race but the Pro men's as well as it came down in buckets, flooding the streets and forcing the riders through foot deep puddles in some of the turns. Just past the half way point, with 8 laps remaining, Erica Allar took a $200 dollar prime and just kept going. TIBCO's Sam Schneider took chase with Laura Van Guilder in tow. That was the break and they quickly had 25 seconds on the field.

Unfortunately, oh no ... not again, a crash stopped this race as well. Starla Teddergreen (Vanderkitten) had fallen and officials stopped the race with just 3 laps remaining as they cleaned up the mess from that one. It was a short halt, however, and after only about 10 minutes, the riders were sent on their way once again with Allar taking the win by a length and a half over Schneider. (LVG missing from podium as she was already on her way to Philadelphia.)

Finally, the much awaited Pro-Am Cat 1 field lined up with slightly brightening skies for what was anticipated to be a very exciting race. Even a low rainbow appeared on the horizon as the top riders were called to the line. The first few laps were ridden cautiously as Mother Nature kept spitting on the riders but kept her anger in check. Brad White (United Healthcare) from Holland, MI threw out a big attack and was quickly joined by team mate Carlos Alzate and Panther's Jonathan Freter. As they gained about 30 seconds with 21 laps to go, the skies opened up again with a deluge of rain and that pretty much sealed their lead.

Adam Leibovitz (Texas Roadhouse) gallantly tried to bridge with a long solo pursuit, but was caught from behind by a 3 rider group of Jackie Simes (Smartstop), Chad Hartley (Sharecare) , and Conor Mullervy (Stan's No Tubes). 9 laps remain.

Only the diehard fans remained now, and the finish area was a field of umbrellas as the rain continued. Brad White made a big dig on the small uphill during the final lap, and crossed the finish line easily ahead of Alzate and Freter. It could be seen on the jumbotron which showed the live internet video feed that all 3 riders were shaking hands and congratulating each other on a fine, cohesive effort.
