• What If the bar had a two level patio for perfect views of the cyclocross race, the band and the Des Moines skyline?

• What If the racers raced within inches of the heckling specators?
• What If crowds gathered for multiple reasons that night; the races, the bands, the party, the bike culture?

The Team Radio Shack webpage lists Matthew Busche for the Tour of Lombardy: "The final race of the season is Saturday, October 15, 2011:  Tour of Lombardy (Italy)

Riders:  Jani Brajkovic, Matthew Busche, Philip Deignan, Ben Hermans, Michal Kwiatkowski, Tiago Machado, Nelson Oliveira and Haimar Zubeldia.  The riders will be directed by Team Manager Johan Bruyneel and Jose  Azevedo.

Brian Matter updates us in his latest bloging about the lifestyles of the fast and furious: "We were the last ones to leave the parking lot with a complete mess on our hands.  We were back to the hotel at 6:30 and by the time we showered and finished cleaning the bikes we were heading out to find a laundromat at 8:30 at night.  Unfortunately there was no way we were going to make it to Trav and Chloe's wedding.  We hit up Big City Burritos and enjoyed dinner in the warmth of the laundromat.  Back to the hotel by 10:00."

Tristan leads Tim Johnson

Tristan Shouten blogs at us with life on the road: "Well, cleaning bikes till 9pm in the hotel, driving around till 10pm doing laundry, eating a burrito, pizza and a blizzard from DQ while I contemplated quitting racing SAturday after the race somehow must have gotten me back in the groove because Sunday morning I woke up and stepped on the floor and knew I had good legs."

Mathew Busche blogs about his last two races of the season in Europe - Paris Bourges on Thursday and Paris Tours on Sunday. "The conditions for Paris Bourges couldn't have been much more dangerous. It was lightly misting/drizzling for the start, so the oil/dirt on the roads was at its peak. We started full gas, and I was incredibly nervous because the roads looked like ice. The asphalt was worn away to the point that it was mostly just the tar remaining. It shimmered in the wetness and passed at an uncomfortable 50+kmh. ... I was in the front of the field, and we were spread shoulder to shoulder on the road. It was nothing short of a miracle that I didn't go down because the guys on all sides of me went down; literally the guys I was shoulder to shoulder with hit the deck, and I kept my cool, didn't slam the brakes and made it through. I was thanking my lucky stars at that point."

ENGLAND: Manchester - Master's Cycling World Championships - RESULTS - Per the National Sports Center Velodrome FB page: " In what may be a first, Minnesota's Dan Casper won the World Championship in the 40 - 44 3k Pursuit with a time of 3:35.4." This is somewhat confirmed over on the Minnesota Cycling Federation page which reads reads: "Dan Casper, GrandStay Hotels, took the Manchester velodrome in England by storm today, winning the Masters World Pursuit Championship for men age 45-49. If memory serves correct,only 2 other local riders have ever won a Masters World Track Championship, Dave Lunde and Roger Parenteau, both back in the 90's." Casper is the reining National Master's champion in the omnium.

WISCONSIN: Sheboygan - WORS -  This photo appeared on Face Book this weekend showing Cole House 'toying' with Nathan Guerra in Sheboygan. Roadie vs MTBer. The real show down will be on Saturday, November 5th at the Iceman Cometh MTB race in Traverse City, MI when Brian Matter will be looking to repeat both his race victory there and his 'Triple Crown' title for winning all three races: Ore to Shore, Chequamegon, and the Iceman. House and Guerra finished 7th and 12th respectively in the 2010 Icemen.

INDIANA: Indianapolis - Nebo/Sycamore - Bloomington Velonews covers the Indiana Cyclocross series for over the weekend: "Saturday's race was held on a beautiful and smoking fast, rolling course. The only things that could slow riders down were the 80+ degree temperatures and a steep run-up with an extra-tall barrier at the bottom. Attendance was fair for the still-developing ICX series, but most of the participants seemed to come from the Indianapolis metro area."

 WISCONSIN: Grafton - Pumpkin 'Cross - RESULTS - Quickly becoming a rider favorite, the Pumpkin Cross in Grafton is held at the scenic Lime Kiln Park, right on the Milwaukee River. Chicago Cat. 1 rider Scott McLaughlin took the Pro Men's race. Samantha Schneider tacked on another win in the Women's Pro race (Trivia: in 2010 she won 12 'cross races in a row). Sam's sister, Skylar took the women's Cat. 4 race.

ILLINOIS: CHicago - Dan Ryan Woods - RESULTS Team Sram sweeps the top two stepf of the men's Pro podium, while Samantha Schneider continues her winning ways in the Pro 1/2 Women's division, as does her younger sister, Skylar, who won the Jr 10-14 (girls and boys!). Second place in the Pro Men,  Scott McLaughlin's wife, Ellen, gives us part of that story: "We spent Sunday at Dan Ryan Woods, a park on the far-south side of the city.  Scott was feeling good after enjoying an easy win in Wisconsin on Saturday ... The race did not go exactly as planned. Scott had to run half of the first lap with a broken derailleur hanger.  (Note that the failed part is not a SRAM product.) This put him about a minute and a half behind the leaders .... by the end of the race he had passed everyone but David, who is also an engineer at SRAM."

Fridley, Nebo, '88 Worlds

Another weekend of great racing weather, but some of the fields may be affected by the WORS race in Sheboygan and the USGP in Colorado.

MINNESOTA: Fridley - Fridley Cross -Smither's gives us his pros and cons of this year's course: "
- In past years there has been a barrier at the bottom of the hill forcing riders to make the hill a run up. No problem, but they changed it up this year to make the hill rideable if you were able to make the tight turn at the bottom and be in the correct gear. It was a nice change and made for a fun and challenging section of the course.
All in all it was a challenging but super fun day on the bike today and I give big thanks to FPA and the Crosstitutes for putting together a great race again this year. Fridley CX is a valuable part of the racing calendar and I look forward to next years race."

Fall Fling, Para Track Nats, With My Own Two Wheels

ILLINOIS: West Chicago - ABD Fall Fling - RESULTS This is the two weekend, 4 race omnium for masters in the Chicago area consisting of a criterium, a TT, and two circuit races. It is the final event on the road calendar. Per the ABD site: "

A huge CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Tower Racing for pulling off the big come-from-behind win to take the 2011 Fall Fling Overall Team Prize!

It looked like Bicycle Heaven had it all locked up in the final race and they were even proclaimed the winner (which we apologize for) but the results crew ten-times checked the standings and the Bike Heaven guys even sent over their hanging-chad specialists to confirm everything- and it was off the strength of Terry O'Grady's sweep of the AM40+ Cat 4/5 mass-start races that Tower won by a margin of just 4 points over Bicycle Heaven!

CALIFORNIA: San Diego - Paralympic Track Nationals - Kristin Meshberg (ABD) of Chicago shares her experiences racing in California in her blog - Pedaling With a Purpose: "

On Sunday we felt like pros and warmed up much better. We had decided the day before to go with a different gear than originally planned and in hindsight we think we went to0 easy. The one Kilometer race started much better for us. We were relaxed and felt great. We gave it our all but were spinning like mad. In the end we got the silver medal by 3 milliseconds!!! That's a little closer than I care to come, but we were stoked. Unfortunately we could not wait for our podium picture as we had a flight to catch.

The most thrilling race to watch was Paralympian and fellow Chicagoan Joe Berenyi's Individual Pursuit final. After Joe's ride it was the general consensus of the entire stadium that it was the best pursuit win anyone had ever seen. It started out with Joe steadily losing ground to his competitor. It looked like Joe was going to be overtaken. But something changed and he started gaining ground. The crowd was going wild as he inched his way into the gold medal just before the finish. It brought down the house!"

Hopkins, Domes, Kewaskum, Sven Nys

ILLINOIS: DeKalb - Hopkins Park CX - The women get good press over on Chicago Women's Bike Racing, Gina Kenny writes: "
The race started and going around the first set of trees went better than the 30+ race, when I got stuck behind a crash, but still did not go great. I was behind Bev Enslow (Proctor Cycling) for the beginning of the race. I felt like I could go faster than her in the twisty sections but she is way faster than me. I was able to get around her and hold her off for almost two laps, I think. However, she got past me on one of the power sections and kept getting farther and farther in front of me. Still, the fact that I actually passed her and held her off for more than a lap is definitely a personal victory.

Devon Gorry (Rambuski Law) took first place, which was no big surprise to anyone. Marne Smiley (Bob’s Red Mill pb Seven Cycles) took second and Jessica Hill (Pony Shop) took third. Mia Moore (ROBOTS <3) took fourth and was the first Cat 3, earning her an awesome $250 spending spree at Johnny Sprockets.  June Upshaw (Village-Verdigris) rounded out the top 5."

WISCONSIN: Kewaskum - Someone over on Team Velotrocadero shared his weekend experiences: "First lap of domes hurt alot, I had totally forgotten the pain of cross races; the typical burning lungs and feeling like puking. I fell off the lead guys on the 2nd lap but handling felt pretty good; I'm more comfortable on technical courses vs. speed courses, this one is a little of both. On the last lap I thought I'd try pulling a wheelie into the sand pits in hopes of smoothly landing half way through the pit- at least thats the visulization that went through my oxygen depleted brain-yah right! what the hell was I thinking! I tried this while half dismounted standing on one pedal- it didn't work. I face planted immediately. Its a good course though and I had a good time. As I hit the venue at Kewaskum I felt almost sick to my stomach (nerves probably), no energy and wondered if I wasted the drive and entry fee. Feeling like that I positioned myself at the start further back than usual-not smart. I don't understand the body sometimes cause as soon as the Ref said "Go" I felt like I was primed to race and everything went smooth & I felt strong. I worked my way up to forth which felt pretty good to do. I started off much slower then on Sat which helped alot. The course is very technical-I was loving the tubulars with all the off-camber; with low pressure they grab well. I couldn't ride the big hill, just too steep for me. All in all it was actually a great race for me. So I guess feeling like shit at the start of a cross race is a good thing. Kudos to Luker who said he road that 90 degree hill 7/10 times, holy shit that takes some power!"

We have results! It's funny that the Chicago Cross Cup site mentions the single speed winners but ignores the cyclocross results. Proof that they do things differently in Chicago - the 4's is the top billed race and they get the call  ups. It works for them, though, and they get a great turnout.

Cross the Domes, River Hill, Hudson - Day 2, Altoona, Hopkins

WISCONSIN: Milwaukee - Cross the Domes / River Hill Park. RESULTS / RESULTS  Maybe that should be Cross 'da Domes, but either way the Wisconsin cyclocross season is underway with a weekend double header. Cross the Domes is a rider favorite and River Hill Park in Kewaskum looked like a winner as well. After showing new riders how to ride cyclocross in his skills clinic on Friday, Brian Matter continued to school the rest of the class with wins on both Saturday and Sunday. Abby Strigel exchanged her MTB for a 'cross bike and continued her season's winning streak in the Pro Women's race with Alyssa Severn coming back from a DNF on Saturday to grab 2nd on Sunday. Sixteen year old Corrie Osborne, WI State Criterium Champion, silver medalist at Nationals, rounded out the podium. Big Ring Flyer's Julie Phelps grabs her second USAC victory of the season in the Cat. 3's, rapidly making a name for herself in sanctioned racing.

WISCONSIN: Hudson - Hudson Double Cross - day 2 - RESULTS - Again MCF takes the call: "In the Elite Men race, Doug Swanson, GrandStay, took the hole shot. As the field first crested the hill through the finish area, spectators where surprised to see Cullen in last place. He had a mechanical problem right after the start, and had to stop and dismount to fix the problem. After 1 lap, Swanson and Faulkner were in the lead, with Cullen chasing 15 seconds back, after switching bikes. WISCONSIN: Milwaukee - Cross the Domes. RESULTS  Absolutely perfect weather greeting riders for the first WCA race of the 'Cross season. Early pix are in on FB from Melissa Putzer. Results are notable for having 64 racers in the Cat. 4 race. Congratulations to Samantha Schneider (TIBCO) and Brian Matter (Gear Grinder) in their victories in the Pro 1/2 fields.

The series continues today, and I think this photo, taken this morning for the River Hill Park CX, is the first time SRAM has ever been in Kewaskum!

WISCONSIN: Hudson - Hudson Double Cross - RESULTS Part of the Minnesota Cycling Federation series, but held just across the Mississippi, this was day one of the two day series. MCF writes: "It was a beautiful sunny day with light winds, and cool temps. The course layout was significantly different than last year, eliminating the single track and "ditch of death" that everyone seemed to complain about last year. They added more off camber, and a hard run-up. The sandy uphill was back, along with the tough grind up to the finish.  That, combined with the uneven prairie ground made for a particularly tortuous course. You could see the "hurts so good" look on riders faces as they rode through the finish area each lap."

The Category 4 field began with 54 riders, 40 in the Cat. 3.

A deceptively twisty course proved to be tougher than most thought as the soft ground, tight turns and run-ups ate up one's energy with each lap.  KUDOs to the race organizers (David & Jacob) of the Pella Racing Team for putting on a great race today.
