Barry-Roubaix Second Hand Report

Here's some info on this cool race as reported by other people. In only it's second running, it has over 700 riders participating this year. This awesome photo montage was posted by Ten Speed Hero Ben Popper reports: "Oh man was I ever not ready for that effort.  Well, at least I did not dress for it they way I should have.  The Barry Roubaix is one bad ass gravel race.  Super steep rollers through the country side of central Michigan. "  Tim Finkel reports: "This one hurt more than any race ever has in March. I suffered. I had to dig deep several times. I made “the selection” but was all out of moves with 3 miles to go."

Official results and more photos: HERE

Sounds like a great event!

2010 C.O.U.G.A.R. Criterium - Joliet

Boy, they don't call Chicago the windy city for nothing that's for sure! It was a howler from the north east and it put those early season legs to the test down in Joliet today. You either had it today, or you didn't. There was no hiding in the pack! But other than that it was a beautiful day and a well executed race by the South Chicago Wheelmen, USAC officials, and the owners of the Autobahn Country Club.

The early bird races had some familiar names again, so let's get that out of the way. Good 'ol Patryk Limanowicz (XXX) got win number 4 this morning, beating Eric Christ (Bicycle Heaven) and Justin Somerville (Bicycle Heaven) in the Men's Cat. 5 race. Katie Isermann (Iron Cycles) took the Women's 3/4, Sam Bianchi (XXX) won the Jr 10 - 14, and the South Chicago Wheelman swept the Jr 15-18 podium with Ryan O'Boyle, Trevor Rolette, and Michael Keller going 1-2-3. Master's 40+ was won by Michael Seguin (XXX), 50+ was swept by Team Mack - Mark McGeen, John Fleckstein, and Gary Doering, and Master's 30+ was won by - good 'ol Patryk Limanowicz (XXX). Aren't you Cat 5's glad he's not 20 years old and going to haunt you your entire career? LOL!

The Women's Open race had a small field, but it showed lots of agression. Leah Sanda (Flatlandia) and Stacy Appelwick (BTN) [I can never spell that team's name correctly - ED] rode off the front and pretty much splintered the group. Sanda took the sprint for the win over Appelwick.

The Men's Cat. 3 was a barn burner with lots of action right down to the end. Burnham Racing's Jason Knauff managed almost a 30 second lead early on and made it look like it was going to be permanent.

Until, that is, Chazz Martin took a blistering stab off the front of the main group and woke them up. That
opened the door to more aggression and eventually Knauff was caught and there was a lead group of nine. The nine worked well together, but late in the game Knauff took another dig. This time he just didn't have the legs to make it stick, and it came down to a sprint for the lead group.

On the finish line, it was Karl Schult (Capital Bicyle) taking the victory who rolled by Joel Friedman (Bicycle Heaven) with only a few meters to go. Thomas Brinney (XXX) came across for 3rd.

The Men's Catagory 4 race was dominated by this man - Jonathan Toftoy (Synergy) who, quite frankly, simply rode away from everybody else! It appeared that the strongest winds of the day were during this race because the trees were really swaying and you could hear the wind just howling. Toftoy got out of the saddle into the headwind every lap and kept the wheels moving. He was clearly the fastest rider on the course at the time, amassing a gap of just over 2 minutes by the end of the race. The field sprint was won by speedy Matt Haiduk (Bicycle Heaven) with Jason Sutherland (SCW) coming in third.

Pro 1/2/3. These guys know only one way to race a bike and that's full throttle. Halfway through the first lap and guys were already 'throwing it down' into the wind. ABD's Ryan Freund was very animated throughout the entire race. Partly due to his constant pressure at the front, a group of five separated themselves from the peloton with three more bridging up soon after. Those eight riders then worked well together pulling a 40 second gap over the hard working field.

With three laps to it was now time to decide who of the eight would be today's King, and the attacks came hard. Andrew Lister (Dogfish) jammed off the front with Ryan Freund (ABD) in hot pursuit. Lister kept the power on high, high enough to cross the line first with Dave Moyer (XXX) hot on his tail for second, Pat Fosse (Bicycle Heaven) came in third.

The faces on ALL the riders showed that it was a very hard day to race but all seemed to agree that this was a great venue to race on.

2010 Burnham Spring Super Criterium

The 3rd annual and many more to come, no doubt. The Burnham Racing, Spidermonkey Cycling, USAC folks did a great job putting on a grand day of racing at the Blachkhawk Ridge race track in South Beloit, IL today. There was a nice turnout on this fine day that saw much better weather than last year's rain and snow! Most fields were filled if not almost filled. The final Cat. 5 race at the end of the day even had a waiting list.

In the early bird races, the winner of the men's Cat 5 was a name that we're all getting familiar with. Taking an early prime and then adding his third victory in as many races, Patryk Limanowicz (XXX)took the top spot. Leah Sanda (Flatlandia) won the Women's 3/4, Robert Downs (Planet Bike) aced the Masters 40+ field, and Mark Shea (Team Mack) won the Masters 50+ race.

In the Masters 30+, Patrick Fasse (Bicycle Heaven) won the first mass stampede of the day taking the field sprint by a bike length over a mass of riders stacked up curb to curb.

After a few cruising laps the Women's Open race started to heat up with a number of attacks that just didn't stick. That brought it down to a tightly contested field sprint and a wonderful post up right on the line.

But WHOA, WAIT JUST A MINUTE SISTER! Lets look at the photo finish on this one! Oooops! First place was way on the left Valerie Brostrom (Bouledogue Tout Noir), second was Jessica Helmlinger (Cafe Hollander) and THEN came Morgan Moon (Team Kenda)!

The action continued in the Men's Cat. 3 race with an aggressive race right from the gun. It seemed like there was a different break off the front on every lap and with the sounding of the bell for the final lap, it was three up the road. But, WHAT? One rider just pulled off and sat up! That left two to take it to the line and it was XXX Racing's Liam Donahue with an impresive lead over the charging pack at the line. Justin Armsead (Team Mack) was second followed by Nate Iden (Burnham Racing).

Men's Catagory 4 began with call-ups at the start. Huh? Call-ups for a 4's race? Oh well, it was a large field and they charged around the course intact through to the final bell. Just out of site in turn two we could hear the carnage of a crash where about a half dozen riders went down, then another few got tangled in the final sprint and crashed as well. It was Spidermokey Cycling with their first win as Michael Shea won it in style.

The Pro 1/2/3 was a barn burner affair as it always is. Five riders got away early on and they looked like they meant business - Tomasz Boba (WDT), Ryan Freund (ABD), David Moyer (XXX), John Tomlinson (XXX), and Ben Anderson (?). A vicious chase ensued and three more bridged up - Al Urbanski (WDT), Andrew Lister (Dogfish), and Dan Ajer (?). These eight riders then worked smoothly like a well oiled time trial machine and built up to a 40 second lead. The field did not want to let them go however and they were strung out in a long line much of the race trying to get back the escaping bandits. Al Urbanski got dropped from the winning break in the final miles and in the end it was Tomasz Boba (WDT) taking the sprint and the win.

The final race of the day was a Men's Cat. 4/5 which was filled to the brim. There again was plenty of aggression but ultimately no one could break the chains and get free. In addition to the three scheduled primes, an impromptu crowd prime worth $42.99 was offered. This was the only cash winnings of the day and I'm sure made some rider very happy. In a mad dash for the line, it was Kyle Selph (Tower Racing) who took the final win of the day.

Racing continues tomorrow at both Kenosha and Joliet.

Weekday Racing? Chicago's "Gaper's Block Criterium"

Racing midweek, in March? Are we in Belgium? Nope, this is Chicago! Half Acre Cycling is having week night racing, all this week,  at Calumet Park, 9801 South Ave G, Chicago.

So, how are they going? Racers are reporting:

" My first ever race. The gapers crits aren’t really for sticking your neck out to get the win – there isn’t really anything TO win. Its more for training and experience."

and

" I was able to go to the ouside of the pack by myself. And that's the way  we ended with myself coming in third.  Not a bad start for the season."

Bending The Rules

Okay, so everybody knows the big rules of bicycle racing like no hand slinging your team mate to the front of the pack like it's Madison Race on the track, or no head butting your rival in the final sprint, but a few more subtle rules have popped up this past week so let's just touch on them briefly.

Steve Tilford posted on his blog last week about crumpling numbers making the point that when you do that the number lays flatter on your back, doesn't act like a sail when riding, and after 30 years of crumpling his numbers he still gets placed in his races just fine, thank you very much. Well, you can read that very interesting post for yourself, but after discussing this with several officials at the last Kenosha race they still ask you to not crumple your numbers because it indeed does make it hard to read your number as you rip by them at 35mph. Yes, Tilford has been crumpling his numbers for the last 30 years and the officials have been b****ing at him about it for 30 years as well! The point is that the little facets of a crumpled number make it hard for the camera to make it out.  They said to simply not fold or crumple your number and place it where they ask. If you want it more securely attatched use more pins or a spray adhesive which is what some riders do from what I understand.

Bottle throwing. This past week one rider was DQ'd for tossing his bottle on the final lap. I imagine that had he not tossed it 20 feet in the air right at the start finish line in front of four different officials he probably would have gotten away with it. If you absolutely must loose that baggage on the last lap, perhaps do it in front of the seaguls on the back straight and make note of what the officials look like because they do walk the course from time to time and just might be standing back there too. If officials are enforcing that rule now in spring, you can bet they will during Superweek. Just something to keep in mind.

Foreign Dudes at Superweek

I just ran across these great photos posted by Christoff Van Heerden of the South African "MTN" team that dominated Superweek last year. Here he is being 'arrested' by the Elgin Police Department and another of the team riding the Ozaukee County Bike Trail. Heck, there's even a few here that were taken by yours truly, so I don't feel bad about posting his photos here! HA!

I think it's great having those guys over here and it's super seeing them have such a great time racing here.

2010 Kenosha Spring Criterium #2 - Let The Fun Begin!

After getting that first race of the year out of the way last week, the racing began to heat up yesterday at the 31st Annual Spring Training Races presented by Kenosha Velosport. Although some of the snow still remained on the ground from the day before, sunshine prevailed and that seem to give extra incentive for riders to 'give it a go' and we saw many break attempts throughout the day.

The morning session saw Sam Schneider (Team Tibco) win again in the open women's race over Rachel Roessingh (IS Corp), Mark Serafin (PACT/Dish) took the 40-49 over Chip Pleper (Gear Grinders), and Casey Masterson (Velo Trocadero) won the 30-39 Masters race over Justin Armstead (Team Mack).

In the afternoon, the Junior 15/16 + 17/18 race started fairly tranquil with a small peloton rolling a few laps, but then Greg Krieger (Team Extreme)(17/18) escaped with Alexander Riva (Kenosha Velosport)(16/17) and looked good doing it leaving a small group of five behind to contemplate their fate. You could hear them make their plans of all working together to reel the bandits in. All except for IS Corps' Chazz Martin who seemed to think: "I'll have none of that, this race is MINE!" and rocketed off in pursuit of the leaders. In two laps he closed the 25 second gap and rested for the sprint. It was Krieger and Martin together through the last turn when Martin exploded with the power he developed racing at the Kenosha Velodrome to take the win. Alexander Riva won the 15/16 over Lionel Rocheleleau (Kenosha Velosport) and Mitchel Borgardus (Team Expo).

This week the Men's Cat. 5 and 4's races were run seperately, perhaps as a response to some issues they had last week when they were run together. In the Cat. 5 race, an early break was caught rather quickly, and that led eventually to a pack sprint won by that very same rider who had broken away earlier. In fact, the same rider that won last week - Patryk Limanowicz (XXX). Second was Andy Feuerstahler (Gear Grinders), Christopher St. Clair (Life Cyclists/Emery's) was third. The 4's race also saw multiple attempts to escape but none were ultimately successful. On the final lap, the pack was still intact going up the back straight but Tim Speciale (Team PSIMET) saw an opening and went for it. As he posted on Bike Forums: "I took the last turn at about 31mph...stood up and hammered, looked back and had plenty of room to sit up and coast across the line for first." Second was Russel Georgeson (Hayes/RPM), third Leif Byrge-Liebig (IS Corp). Congratulations to the new Team PSIMET for their first win of the year.

From here, the racing got confusing with multiple breaks, bridges, and drops in the Cat. 3 race and no official results to piece it all together. ABR wraps up very quickly towards the end of the day! However, the Pro 1/2 race was very fun to watch with Velo Trocadero pretty much dominating the animated race that was visibly faster and more aggressive than last week. After an early move by Trocadero, they sent TT specialist Tim Pacholski off the front and used their three others to good use by effectively blocking the chase. The half way point saw Pacholski pretty much safely off the front, so they sent another rider to bridge, but that was unsucessful. At the bell for the last lap, it was Pacholski about a half lap ahead, and three Trocadero riders on the front of the peloton. Tim Pacholski took the well deserved victory and speedy, Chazz Martin (IS Corp) got the field sprint for second. Well done Velo Trocadero for a great team victory!

Racing continues next Sunday for one final stop at the Lakeview Corporate Park in Kenosha preceded Saturday by USAC's first area race at Blackhawk Farm's raceway in South Beloit, IL.

Ahhh ... memories.

Well, not much cycling dirt coming across the news desk here at Peloton Star, so we turn to some interesting blog reading. Chicago's Ace of 'Cross Ben Popper has been down in North Carolina doing some spring training and came across some impassable snow in the mountains. Then, Sheboygan's MTB champ Brian Matter has been in Arizona getting some sunshine until they got a dose of winter driving back. You should have stayed home boys, it's great here!

Finally, Steve Tilford of Kansas has a great read about crumpling numbers. To crumple or not to crumple. That is the question!

Cycling Jokes!

Here's a few to pass the time until you get out to ride later. These and more (including the dirty ones) can be found on Team Estrogen's site.

You Know You're Addicted To Cycling When...Your surgeon tells you you need a heart valve replacement and you ask if you have a choice between presta and schrader.
A Power Bar starts tasting better than a Snickers.
You wear your heart monitor to bed to make sure you stay within your target zone during any extracurricular activities.
The funeral director tells you "NO!" you can't ride your Cannondale in the funeral procession, even if you keep your headlight on.
You're too tired for hanky-panky on a Friday night but pump out a five-hour century on Saturday.
AND the number-one reason you know you're addicted to bicycling...
You no longer require a hankie to blow your nose.

Border Crossing
A man on a bike, carrying two sacks on his shoulders, was stopped by a guard while crossing the US-Mexican border.
"What's in the bags?" asked the guard.
"Sand," the cyclist replied.
"Get them off. We need to take a look."
The guard emptied the bags and found out they contained nothing but sand. The man reloaded his bags and continued across the border. A week later, the same man was crossing again with two more bags. The guard demanded to see them, and again they contained nothing but sand. This continued every week for six months, until one day the cyclist failed to appear. A few days later, that same guard ran into the cyclist in the city.
"Hey, where have you been?" the guard asked. "You sure had us wondering! We knew you were smuggling something across the border. So tell me and I won't say a word. What was it?"
The man smiled and told him the truth. "Bicycles!"

MWCCC - MidWest Collegiate Cycling Conference

With the season opener race held in Kenosha this past Sunday, many of you may have asked yourself I wonder who's going to show? or Where's Loberg? or Kyle Jacobson? Well, it so happens that there was a three day series of collegiate racing going on near Indianapolis, IN. Saturday featured a road race in the morning with distances between 28 and 45 miles followed in the evening with a 5 mile 'naked' time trial (get you mind out of the gutter) where aero equipment was not allowed, then on Sunday was a criterium.

You can find the full results here.

Season Opener - Kenosha Spring Crit. #1

The 2010 season has begun! Approximately 200 riders representing different ABR categories competed in Kenosha's Lakeview industrial park under partly cloudy skies. Temperatures rose to 50 F degrees but the north east wind off Lake Michigan kept a chill in the air. That wind, which the riders faced head on in the back straight, also put the sting in their legs. As one rider put it: "That wind is no good if you have any ambition to do anything today."

In the morning races, Sam Schneider (Tibco) took the Women's Open catagory over Elizabeth Engwis (Kenda) and Carrie Keperrick (Nova Cycle). Other winners in the morning included Heidi Stangl (Tri Wis) in the Women's 4 and  John Acker (Wheel & Sprocket) in the Masters 30-39.

In the Junior Men 17-18, two riders - Lukas Verzbicas (Multisport Madness) and Parick Diamond (Gear Grinders) broke from the field early and made it stick. As Diamond got dropped by Verzbicas, it was Team Extreme's Greg Krieger  who bridged the gap, rode through Diamond, but was not able to catch Verzbicas who won all alone with a handsome lead.

The Men's Cat. 4 and 5 races, which often seems to be the premier event of the day, was well attended with riders representing all parts of Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

Perhaps with legs warmed up in the junior race, it was Verzbicas,  Diamond, and Krieger at the front applying pressure early on but fresher legs were not having any of that and, through a crash on the back straight, it came down to a field sprint.

Russel Georgeson (Hayes / RPM) was first, followed by Michael Geitner (Extreme) and Greg Krieger (Extreme) who took the tight sprint for 3rd. Although that strong wind continued to blow in the rider's faces while going up the back straight, the Men's Cat. 3 race was quite animated. Several riders attacked on lap one followed by other attempts to escape, but none got more than 10 seconds. None until diesel powered Chris Padfield cranked it up and simply rode away from everyone.
Midway through the race, several riders got tangled up right at the Start / Finish line and went down. One Team Psimet rider was hurt badly enough to be taken by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation. Word on the street has it that he will be okay and we wish him the best for a fast recovery and hope he can ride again soon. Meanwhile, Padfield continued on his mission for a victory which he took handily.
In the 'Premier' (?) Pro 1/2 event a small field rolled of the front together but two riders quicky put them to shame by riding of the front and lapping them by half distance.

In the end it was (?) taking the sprint over (?) to win the Pro 1/2 season opener.

Junior Dropouts Cycling Team

The Junior Dropouts Cycling Team is a new junior road and; cyclocross bike racing team for young people in the Madison area. For the 2010 road season all high school students are welcome to join regardless of previous cycling experience. Middle school students are invited to attend the meeting and membership will be considered on a case by case basis. They hope to expand to include younger kids in the future. Besides  racing bikes the team will promote bike riding to school.

The team is sponsored by the Brazen Dropouts Cycling Club and Trek Bicycle Store of Madison. The head coach is Gordy Paulson of Paulson Performance Cycling. Several members of the Brazen Dropouts and UW Cycling Team have volunteered to be assistant coaches, and we are looking for more.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 7PM held at Memorial High School, Room 145.
You can find more info on FACEBOOK, or on their BLOG.
