Cyclocross fever is strong and highly contagious here in the Midwest. Still missing some news of the action from Michigan, especially a pair of races WAY up on Copper Harbor! Will try to catch up tomorrow.
IOWA: Des Moines - Night Cap Cross - A night race in the Land of Tall Corn, but this one is in downtown Des Moines at Mullet's Bar. Mark Savery (Trek Midwest), gives us the call, (be sure to read the whole story): "After hearing great things about the Night Cap Cross, actually make the Oakley Night Cap Cross ... It really has all the ingredients one wants at a 'cross race. It's at night under the lights. It's at a bar with tons of spectators. And it has three live bands playing just inches from the course. What makes it tricky, is the whole thing is contested on a 8/10ths of a mile course. " (Photo: Amadeo Rossi)

"I knew I had my work cut out for me as Kevin McConnell and possibly Brian Eppen would be in attendance. I knew virtually nothing about Kevin, only that he was capable of competing with KCCX fast boys Kevin Fish and Brad Cole." "With two to go, Kevin took the lead back. I waited and waited until with a half lap to go I jumped him on the final long straightaway going into the technical and tight last half of the course. I thought this would be it as I fought hard to accelerate out of each turn. On the last mini straightaway leading to the final sequence of corners I heard him coming and he squeezed inside me on a turn executing and pretty aggressive block pass as he almost punched me into a white Jeep Cherokee parked on display next to the course. The rest was a formality. The course was too tight for me to attempt any sort of pass and I managed to just keep it close for 2nd place."
MINNESOTA: Centuria / Hudson, WI - Baker Orchard Cross RESULTS / Cross the Y RESULTS - Held in Wisconsin, but actually part of the Minnesota Cycling Federation series. James Cullen on MCF.Net continues to give us great post-race writeups:
Saturday: "In the elite men's race, Doug Swanson, GrandStay Hotels, took control
early dropping everyone else, except the Specialized duo of Adam Bergman
and Pat Lemieux. After winning last years race, Jordan Cullen, Clif Bar
Devo, was looking for a repeat, only to suffer a mechanical right at
the start, dropping to last place. 16-year old Cullen was chasing back,
when he crashed into a downed rider in the sandpit, suffering a tire
puncture, putting him out of contention. Meanwhile, at the front of the
race, Bergman got away solo, as a large chase group formed, battling
for 2nd. The chase included Swanson, Lemieux, Peterson, Benno,
Froemming, Smith, and Jesse Rients, Kuhl/Bicycle Fit Guru. As the gap to
Bergman grew, Lemieux's saddle broke, causing him to lose touch with
the group. Bergman rolled to an easy win, with Peterson finishing a
solid 2nd. Benno outsprinted Froemming for 3rd overall, followed by
Rients, and then Smith. Both Cullen and Lemieux went on to finish the
race on back-up bikes."
Sunday: "Specialized Racers swept the elite mens podium at Cross @ the Y, with
Adam Bergman remaining undefeated in his 4th win this season. Bergman
broke away early in the race with teammates Jeff Kluck and Pat Lemieux,
as they worked together all the way to the final lap. No gifts in racing
as Bergman broke away from Kluck for the win, Kluck finishing 2nd, and
Lemieux 3rd. Chris Fisher, Crossniacs, was the only rider to maintain
contact with the trio early in the race, only to be caught later by a
large chase group. Ian Stanford, GrandStay Hotels, returning to cross
racing after a 3 year hiatus, emerged from the chase group to grab 4th
place. Fisher held on for 5th."
