2013 Cone-Azalia Road Race

MICHIGAN: Milan - Cone-Azalia Classic Road Race - RESULTS PHOTOS

“The Paris-Roubaix of the Midwest”

Under near perfect weather (for a change), a near record number of riders raced in Michigan's Paris-Roubaix type road race. Paul Martin wrote of this race back in 2011: "Cone Azalia is about as epic of a road race as you will find in the Midwest.  Sure, it’s only 70 miles and pancake flat southeast Michigan, but when the race’s website says “anything you have that is carbon fiber on your road bike, if you can, LEAVE IT AT HOME! Seriously! It may BREAK!” you know you’re in for it.  28 miles of the 70 are dirt/gravel roads, littered with 6 inch deep potholes filled with water by morning rain.  This turned the dirt into a wet cement like spray that coated your face, legs and drivetrain. Riding in the wind on the dirt was imperative, not only to avoid the mud spray off the back wheel of the guy in front of you but to steer around the huge potholes that constantly ejected water bottles and punctured tires."

Martin Veccio of Team Panther gives us the 2013 blow by blow:

Team Panther showed to Michigan’s version of Paris-Roubaix with a strong squad. The cross winds and the potholed dirt roads would certainly play a role in deciding the race.  The winner would be a hard man. I flatted after only 7 miles.  I hit a particularly square cornered pothole and pinch flatted. I had my rear wheel off already as the wheel truck slammed on the brakes. I tossed a new wheel in and and got rolling again, and was quickly paced back to the field.  Probably the best wheel change of my life. ... More attacks went as the field was dwindling because of flats and a hard pace and no place to hide from the cross winds. A group of 4 riders went and were able to make a sustainable gap. Panther had only one rider in the break. Paul said “we need another ride up there, Martin, GO.” ...  The Panther boys kept it aggressive leading into the finish, keeping the other teams on their toes and forcing them to chase. The remainder of the field sprinted and Panther was able to get four in the top 10, with Paul Martin in third. - Martin Vecchio
