The Fat and Skinny Tire Festival is a weekend long promotion of the bicycle in north, central Indiana (schedule). Beginning on Friday with bike to work day, opening ceremonies, live music, bmx shows then on to the weekend with cycle tours, kids events, night MTB rides, more live music, and of course a road race and criterium! While the rider names might night ring a bell, when you see these teams line up next to you at ToAD ... you know who to watch!
Fat and Skinny Tire Festival
INDIANA: Winona - Winona Road Race - RESULTSPHOTOS - Road action kicked off with a 62 mile road race for the Pro 1/2 men, 35 miles for women on an 8.8 mile course. Race details are sketchy but all the big teams were present and there was a large crash at the end of lap 1 when the pace eased off a bit. Rob Thompson of Panther gets his 4th win of 2013, Dori Leib - her first. Racing for Riley gives us a synopsis:
"Racers gathered from not only every corner of Indiana but also from the whole Midwestern region—and they were all ready to compete. The women’s race saw the Racing for Riley squad establish control from straight out of the gate, as Bri Clark, Katie Arnold, and Melissa Moeller launched attack after attack on the hot, rolling, and windy course to get away from the field. The attacks were to no avail, for the field refused to let anyone get away. It wasn’t until the final lap that six racers broke away to sprint for the win. Bri and Melissa were two of those racers rounding out the sprint.
The men’s race was teeming with riders from Bissel-ABGiant and Panther, but the Riley squad of Tom Cox, Doug Fagan, Charlie Crouse, and Harry Clark looked ready to respond. Unfortunately, the strengthening winds caused some controversial positioning among riders in the pack, which eventually led to rubbed wheels and a shark-bite looking scar for Harry to wield in the crit."

Once again, the Riley women controlled the race with perfectly orchestrated attacks and counter-attacks. A few moves stuck off the front for a while, thanks to teammates blocking back in the pack. However, once the bell was ringing on the final lap, the field was stringing out with four blue jerseys driving the front. Louise buried herself in the Pain Cave to drop off Bri, Katie, and Melissa for a 1-2-4 finish. The ladies then lit up the podium with neon skirts!

Racing for Riley: The final event of the day saw the Men’s 1/2/3 field once again favoring Panther and Bissel. The Riley squad was comprised of Harry, Doug, Charlie, Matty, John, and (yep, he saddled up a second time!) Tom. As time wore on in the hour-long race, over half of the field had been pulled out, but the guys kept riding strong and toward the front. They even launched an attack of their own every so often. A few late moves broke things up a bit, and Doug sprinted for a top ten finish. All in all, the team saw a successful weekend up at the KCV headquarters and had a blast racing with one another as well as everyone else that came out! Thanks so much to Race Director Greg Demopoulos and all the KCV Cycling members and volunteers for an amazing weekend!!!
